Distinguished Professor of Nutrition and Director of the Human Nutrition Unit at Rovira i Virgili University (URV) and ICREA Acadèmia Investigator. CIBERobn Principal Investigator and coordinator of its Nutrition Program. Currently, he is the Director of the Catalan Center of Nutrition (CCNIEC), Chairman of the INC World Forum for Nutrition Research and Dissemination, and a member of the Expert Panel of the Diabetes and Nutrition Study Group (DNSG) of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), among other positions.

Prof. Salas’s research has focused on clinical trials in humans to evaluate the effect of food, dietary compounds and dietary patterns on obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases. Since 2005, he has been one of the leaders of the PREDIMED study (n=7,447 participants), and is currently Coordinator and Chairman of the Steering Committee of the PREDIMED-Plus study (n=6,874 participants), two large clinical trials for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease and mortality. PREDIMED-Plus is a multi-collaborative project involving 30 research groups, and has received national, European, Canadian and US grants. With all these projects and collaborations, the group has developed skills in precision medicine using different omics methodologies, especially metabolomics and metagenomics, which are now being implementing in epidemiologic and clinical studies. Prof. Salas is also involved in two prospective national and international cohort studies: CORALS (children followed for 10 years) and LEDFERTYL (men in reproductive age).

Prof. Salas has published more than 850 scientific articles, amounting to more than 49,000 citations with an SCI H-index of 100, and has published 14 books and mentored 32 PhD students. He has been declared by Clarivate Analytics and Stanford University as one of the most influential researchers in the world.
